From 2010 the Chitose Airport in Hokkaido is harvesting the winter's snow, using it to cool down the building during summer. The snow is stored through the use of heat-insulating materials for covering. How ever only around 45 percent of the snow collected during wintertime remains until summertime. The collected snow is used to chill the liquid of the building's cooling system. The process provides 30% of the terminal building's cooling needs in the summer.  According to Japan Today, it can reduce the airport's CO2 emissions by 2100 tons per year.

The airport was cooled down by standard technologies like mechanical ventilation.

In Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, falls between 20 and 30 feet of snowfall per year. The island has been experimenting the use of snow in cooling systems since 1998. Some similar systems has already installed in smaller public buildings.

The same process has been already applied in smaller buildings. It can be used in all the area with similar climatic conditions: cold, snowy winter and warm summer where there are buildings which needs cooling.
